Rough Trade screening of 'The Ballad of Mott The Hoople'
19 November 2011 © 2011 Mick Bolton
Here is a dispatch from MTH keyboardist Mick Bolton, who attended the Rough Trade screening of the MTH doc..
Hello
Here are some photos from last night's screening of the documentary. It
was in a large record store called Rough Trade East, in London. I drove
up there with Phil and his partner Chris and we met Luther and Verden in
a pub (where else), along with Mike and Chris the producers. When we
got to the venue I was beginning to feel a Spinal Tap moment coming on -
there was hardly anyone there with about 10 minutes to go till
showtime. Then suddenly lots of people came in and it was standing room
only.
When the film started we adjourned to another pub round the corner -
Mike and Chris knew the exact timing of the film, so we got back in just
as it reached the bit where Luther joined the band. Just in time for
him to say: 'when I joined the band I gave them a shot in the arm - not
literally of course', which always gets a laugh. Luther was his usual
self all night - reminding everyone that he was 'Luther Grosvenor - aka
the GREAT Ariel Bender'.
We did a Q&A after the film - the response to that was brilliant. I
think the audience would have stayed all night, if it wasn't for the
staff wanting to close up for the night.
There were lots of young people there. The front row was almost entirely
made up of young women under 30 which prompted a bit of banter from
Luther. 'Are you Japanese darling? Yes you in the front row - you look
Japanese. Have you come here all the way from Japan? Oh, Camden. Well,
thanks for coming anyway'.
Enjoy the photos. There's one that I find quite poignant, showing Buffin on the screen, still up there in front of his fans!
Mick

5 March 2011 This, courtesy of Justin Purington... 'Just noticed this excerpt in a review of Ken Garner's "Peel Sessions" book(Jarvis
Cocker writing about his first Peel Session): 'We travelled down to
Maida Vale in a van driven by a very strange man we'd contacted via a
card pinned to the Virgin record shop noticeboard. We'd had to borrow
lots of equipment from a band called The Naughtiest Girl Was a Monitor
'cause we didn't have enough stuff of our own. The session was to be
produced by Dale Griffin, who used to be the drummer in Mott the Hoople;
I seem to remember that he was wearing cowboy boots. I think the crisis
point came when Wayne was attempting to get a home-made synth-drum to
work that a friend of his at school had made out of a rubber
burglar-alarm mat and an old electronic calculator - Dale Griffin looked
at this 15-year-old kid crouching on the floor bashing what looked like
a doormat with some wires coming out of it and just put his head in his
hands. But to his credit, the session did get finished and after it,
everything else started for me...' ' Thank you, Justin! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 24 February 2011 Contact.Music.com: 'Queen: Mott The Hoople Taught Queen To Rock'---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20 February 2011 There will be two screenings of the documentary The Ballad of Mott The Hoople in Hereford, England in March 2011: 25 March and 28 March at the Main House of the Courtyard Centre for the Arts. Click here for more info at the Courtyard Centre for the Arts website. ‘The rock’n’roll circus is in town...’, but no
other rock doc starts with pictures of High Town and Hereford United’s
dressing room in the 60s! The story of the rise and fall of Hereford’s
most famous rock band is enlivened by dazzling raconteur, Ian Hunter’s
sharp insights into the ups and downs of rock stardom, and some great
70s footage of Mott in their pomp that shows what a fabulous live band
they were. There’s also a young, starry-eyed David Bowie generously
giving them All The Young Dudes to record so giving a new lease of life
to a band on the point of collapse. All the interviewees here are open
and fascinating, and directors, Chris Hall and Mike Kerry, present their
story with the passion and affection of genuine fans.
